Building Pensacola’s bedrock

There is a saying: If you don’t know where you are going, then all roads lead there.

As a result, some roads are longer and more treacherous than they need to be. A person may reach the destination, but too late.

A main goal of the Studer Institute is to improve the quality of life for the community. Research shows that small businesses are the bedrock of any community. While it is wonderful when a community can have a large environmentally clean corporation that offers good jobs, the great majority of workers have jobs in medium- to small-sized organizations.

Large organizations usually have the resources they need for planning and training. Due to their size and daily demands, most small- and medium-sized organizations do not have the dollars for strategic planning. If there isn’t a strategic plan, however, the organization may never be successful enough to sustain itself or grow.

Having started a few companies myself, I understand the pressure and need to focus everyday on the company. Small business owners often feel too busy to develop a plan or to take the time to attend development sessions. Then there’s the cost of doing so. This is why the Institute feels providing such resources to organizations at low or no cost is vital to improving the quality of life in our community.

If we can help create better organizations, then they will achieve more success. Those they serve benefit as well as those that work in the organizations. This success allows for more growth and we all win.

The multitude of not-for-profits that serve our community may benefit in a variety of ways. First they like any other small- or medium-sized organization need a solid plan with skills to execute it. The more successful the private sector is, the more dollars that can be raised to help the not-for-profits carry out their mission.

We were thrilled to have 310 people attend the first Studer Institute workshop “Leadership in the Workplace.” The feedback from that workshop led the Institute to bring in Lynne Cunningham for a strategic planning session on Nov. 14.

Thank you for your dedication to the development of your organization.

We will soon be announcing the 2015 institute workshop schedule as well as online resources in the area of professional and organizational development.

My best,

Quint
