Studer Community Institute’s projects all aim to improve this community. We think all of our work will help build the Pensacola area into an Early Learning City — a place where the healthy development of all children under 5 is everyone’s priority.
Our core work focuses on community-based and healthcare-based education opportunities for parents. And we rely on and support our partners in every corner of the community who are working to do their fair share.
One of those partners is Hillcrest Baptist Church. The church on Nine Mile Road also hosts an early childhood education center. Billie Gordon, director of the preschool center there, shared a little about how she and her staff are working to integrate the Early Learning City concept into what they do every day with the children and families in their care.
One thing she is doing is using “Is your child ready?”, a graphic created by SCI staff to help at a glance focus adults on some of the skills kindergarten teachers will look for in little ones.
“I showed (‘Is your child ready?’) to our teachers and sent some home to the parents with a note encouraging them to use them with their children,” Gordon wrote. “Our 4-year-old classroom teacher is incorporating the information into her classroom instruction on top of what she’s already doing. We do three evaluations throughout our school year with our 4-year-old class to gauge where the students are and what areas we need to ramp up.
“I’m considering using the information on the files you sent as part of the evaluations as well.  Every little bit helps our students get ready!”
Gordon and her team at Hillcrest clearly are living the mantra, “Each one, teach one.” We are so grateful to be just a small part of the wonderful work they are doing.
