Several numbers in the Studer Community Institute dashboard stand out to Stan Connally, president and CEO of Gulf Power.

But he views one number as particularly illustrating the challenges we face in the Pensacola Metro: 66 percent of students in the Escambia County School District qualify for free or reduced-priced school lunches.

“At the end of the day, it’s a clear signal that families aren’t as healthy as we would like them to be in the community,” he says.

Connally appears in a segment of this week’s episode of the Studer Community Institute’s TV show that’s airing on BlabTV and streaming on BlabTV.com.

This week’s program features the Institute’s Shannon Nickinson and Reggie Dogan interviewing a trio of Escambia County School District employees who played key roles in the remarkable 6.6 percent increase in the county’s high school graduation rate. The show features:

— Michelle Taylor, director of workforce education.

— Lesa Morgan, director of high schools.

— Holly Busse, graduation coach.

Connally sees a strong connection between improving Escambia’s graduation rate and kindergarten readiness as a way to improve the health of families.

“Jobs are rising, yes, but we’ve got to get the skill levels up at the same time. To get the skills levels up, we need more and more children learning. We get more and more children learning to get their skill levels up to where they need to be, and we begin to impact poverty. And the Studer Community Institute’s dashboard gives us a beacon to all that.”
