Studer Community Institute Founder Quint Studer was recently featured in The Journal for Quality and Participation.

The quarterly, peer-reviewed publication from the ASQ (American Society for Quality) addressing issues related to the human side of quality.

Themes and topics include leadership, employee involvement, and teamwork. Process improvement in these areas encourages and enables people to participate in decisions that affect quality, customer satisfaction, and the performance of their organizations.

Quint Studer is a businessman, a visionary, an entrepreneur, a mentor to many, and extremely dedicated to the Northwest Florida community. He has given his life to designing the building blocks for people and organizations that guide them to achieving and sustaining high performance. His focus now is on building vibrant communities, and the mission of Studer Community Institute to improve the quality of life in the community.

The article in the The Journal for Quality and Participation makes note that “One challenge that many people are experiencing across the globe is finding a place to live that provides a satisfactory quality of life. The account of Pensacola’s revitalization shows how thoughtful change-management practices and the engagement of local stakeholders can drive improvement.”

According to Studer: “Great communities make us feel grounded, protected, and empowered. They provide jobs and solid economic growth. They attract new talent and keep existing talent from leaving town. Great communities do a great job of educating young people; provide safe neighborhoods, and nurture the health and well-being of all citizens. They provide a sense of belonging, connection, and support, and they’re just fun places to live.”

“I believe every community has the potential to be great,”  said Studer. “Geographic location helps, but it’s only one small piece of the puzzle. The good news is that we can build quality communities.”

Abstract: Every community wants to be vibrant. We know the reasons why; we want to create a place our children and grandchildren will want to spend time. We also know what a vibrant community means; we need to attract investments, provide good jobs, and create lively downtowns where citizens will want to work, live, shop, and play. What’s usually missing is how to make this happen. This book addresses all three of these considerations, providing a blueprint for how our communities can get from where they are now to where they want to be. When the citizens of Pensacola, FL, started the town’s revitalization process, it was struggling economically, and downtown had many vacant buildings. Today, there is more new construction taking place than at any time in modern history. Property values are soaring. Small businesses are strong and growing.

There’s a new focus on education, and downtown is well on its way to vibrancy. This book shares the lessons Pensacola learned on its journey and lays out the tactics the community used to get where it is now. Readers will discover strategies for managing the psychological aspects of change—how to alleviate fear, create confidence, and win buy-in, why it’s crucial to diagnose before treating, why a burning platform is needed to engage people emotionally and drive change, and many other factors that create successful community revitalization. The book is filled with best practices readers can modify easily for their own situations and offers a valuable resource for civic leaders, business owners, and all citizens who have a stake in building a community they can be proud to call home.
