Civic Conversations - Public town halls and workshops with the nation’s leading thinkers and experts who will share their expertise on what it takes to build strong communities.

Imagine if Pensacola had an opportunity to hear from some of the world’s leading experts on making cities great. What new ideas would that conversation spark? What new (and old) questions could be answered?

The Challenge
Despite the current regional progress, the Pensacola area lags behind the rest of the state in terms of poverty and education. From low wages to high infant mortality, poor educational attainment to significant wage gaps, there is so much room to improve. For instance, Escambia County Schools rank 58th out of 67 Florida Counties in terms of high school graduation with 59.1% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunches. Roughly half of the households in the area are considered “rent-burdened.”

The Solution
With partnership support from the Pensacola News Journal, the Center for Civic Engagement is creating a real opportunity with CivicCon – Civic Conversations. The Pensacola community will have the opportunity to hear from and engage with the nation’s leading thinkers and experts in a variety of topics including fiscally-sound communities, getting parking right, social equality and diversity, infrastructure that connects, historic preservation, walkability as economic development and civic engagement. CivicCon will put the Pensacola area on the forefront of civic engagement and community progress, providing guidance and knowledge that can be used by local governments, civic organizations, educational institutions, neighborhood advocates and concerned citizens. Our goal is to improve the quality of life for the people of the Pensacola area.
