"It is not easy to fight 'city hall,' but it can be done with united voices."
Escambia County Commissioner Lumon May had led the charge to revamp county regulations on borrow and debris pits in response to residents' complaints about noise, dust and air quality concerns.
The county recently extended a moratorium on issuing new permits for land clearing and construction and demolition debris pits in the county until August, while county staff work on those regulations.
Those plans include determining the best way to notify residents when air quality monitors detect elevated levels of hydrogen sulfide in the neighborhoods. The gas, which is given off by decomposing drywall, is an irritant to the respiratory system and can exacerbate symptoms for people with asthma and other breathing problems.
