Apalachicola’s economy in trouble as oyster supply declines

The Panama City News Herald reports that the oyster industry is facing hard economic times because of "water-flow issues, environmental concerns, health and safety regulations and economic realities." Apalachicola's oysters are renowned for their taste, but as the harvests have declined, many restaurants, including some in the city itself, have turned to Texas for their supplies. Five generations of Phillip Vinson's family have pulled oysters from the bay, but Vinson fears those days may soon be over.
“It is definitely not like it used to be. This use to be a very high-paying job,” he said. “I honestly don’t see the next generation making it out here.”
