Ashton J. Hayward III was sworn in for a second term as mayor of Pensacola at a special meeting Tuesday. Flanked by his wife, An and their son, Aiden, Hayward took the oath of office. He easily won re-election Nov. 4; he is the city's first "strong mayor," elected in 2010 after the new form of charter government was established by voters. Hayward touched on the same themes that arose in his campaign of promoting Pensacola's growth, nurturing the renaissance of downtown and improving the perception of Pensacola on a larger regional and national stage. He also made a point to include the members of City Council — with whom his relationship has sometimes been rocky — in listing the accomplishments and improvements seen in the city in the last four years, noting that "We got UPS together...We got VTMAE together ... We landscaped A Street together.. We built Admiral Mason Park together...We revitalized our port together...We built the Maritime Park together." "We've got great things going on in Pensacola and Escambia County," he said. "I'm going to continue to serve with passion and vigor for our community."
