City of Pensacola officials are starting the process to begin demolishing Bayview Community Center.
The center, closed permanently thanks to flood-related damage from last April’s rains, was plagued with mold and mildew issues that limited the building’s uses when it was open.
In a memo to City Council, City Administrator Eric Olson writes that the building had handicapped-accessibility issues and “lingering issues with asbestos that made some needed renovations cost-prohibitive.”
Olson said insurance will pay about $380,000 on the flood damage claim for the center, but that would only cover the cost to restore the building to its previous state, which won’t address those existing issues.
A hazardous materials survey from PSI will cost $3,950 to establish the extent of asbestos removal and related issues at the building, Olson said. Once that survey is done, a request for bids to demolish the building will be issued. Demolition is expected to take two weeks, the memo says.
