NEWS RELEASE -- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida announced Laura Bryant as 2013 Big of the Year for Escambia County.

Bryant  received her award at Saufley Field on Aug. 8 with her “little sister” there to cheer for her.

Bryant has been matched with her “little”, Shay, since August 2007. Throughout their years together, Laura has taught Shay many firsts and exposed her to numerous different activities, including playing chess, learning pottery, eating sushi and planting a vegetable garden, which Laura uses to teach Shay about healthy eating choices.

They share a love of books and spend a lot of time together at the library and local bookstores. Laura was also able to take Shay with her to Disney World this past spring break and they had a blast.

Bryant also has helped Shay become an A/B Honor Roll student, and Shay’s family could not be more proud. Shay recently told her case manager, "Laura is a great person and a wonderful influence" and she loves that Laura helps her with anything she needs and teaches her valuable life lessons.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida has been providing one-to-one youth service for 25 years by providing caring, adult mentors to children ages six to 18. Its mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, positive relationships that have a direct and lasting impact on the lives of everyone involved.
