La Costa Latina is bringing back the Cinco de Mayo festival to downtown Pensacola, transforming Palafox Street into a festive Mexican town. The family friendly event on Sunday, May 3, from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m., will include traditional favorite performances from Mexican folklorico dance presentations, live bands and authentic Mexican food. Lupita Sosa’s Dance Co. returns to perform lively dances that celebrate Mexico from Veracruz, Jalisco and other Mexican states. The company will also present traditional native Aztec dance of the Concheros. Also on tap will be the charros (cowboys) from the West, Alejando Nevarez and Jesus Placencia Peña. web_CINCO DE MAYO - 7 From Romana to Government to Palafox streets will be music from DJ Vasco Milord and DJs Pablo Solis and Gipzye, with sound provided by Rancho Alegre of Fort Walton Beach and NY Billares in Pensacola engineered by Carlos Productions. Want to dance? Veronica Helt and her Zumba group will warm up for the live music. Performing on the main stage will be Andaliegos de Tierra Caliente, followed by Crudos de Durango. The folkloric dancers and charros will perform together with the mariachi band in a lively and colorful show. web_CINCO DE MAYO - 43 A new addition to the celebration is the participation of the Krew de los Muertos. The mardi graw krew honors the Mexican observance of the Day of the Dead, and will provide a memorial wall to allow visitors to commemorate loved ones with special messages and other items. In true mardi gras fashion, the krew will have treats on hand. Admission is free, thanks to sponsors including University of West Florida, Visit Pensacola, Gulf Power, and Cox Communications. Vendor space is still available, and volunteers are needed.
