The City of Pensacola will receive more vouchers to help homeless veterans through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing initiative combines the City's Housing Choice Voucher Rental Assistance Program with case management and clinical services for homeless veterans. The 16 additional vouchers are available as of May 1, bringing the total to 157 spots available for veterans in the program, which pays a portion of the VASH family’s rent directly to the landlord, with the amount paid determined by household income and other factors. Vouchers are based on geographic need and public housing agency administrative performance. Veterans interested in the program should start with the VA caseworker, who will refer them to the city housing office. To participate in HUD-VASH, veterans must be currently homeless, eligible for VA medical care, and have an identified clinical need for case management. Landlords willing to participate in the program also are needed. If you are interested, call Stephen Voight of the VA at 850-912-2268, or Marsha Bazinet of the Pensacola Housing Office at 850-858-0312or [email protected].
