Rolling Hills landfill’s woes may be mounting. Pensacola Mayor Ashton J. Hayward III will ask City Council next week to sign off on an interlocal agreement that would reroute yard trash collected by city from the Wedgewood-area facility to the county-owned Perdido Landfill. The deal — which would go to Escambia County Commissioners in January if Council approves — would see the city conduct 10 neighborhood cleanups in the county in exchange for free yard trash disposal at the Perdido Landfill. Since 2011 the city has disposed of yard trash at Rolling Hills C&D facility, where the disposal rate is $2.50 per cubic yard — about $11.15 a ton. The current rate at the Perdido Landfill is $27.62 per ton.  The city still is taking yard trash to Rolling Hills, but the contract with the landfill expired Nov. 4. The interlocal agreement would be in place for five years. If the interlocal agreement goes through, the city would save $108,000 a year. In July, DEP revoked Rolling Hill’s permit to operate; it is remained operational while the owners appeal that ruling.
