Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward announced this afternoon that Steve Smith, previously of Flower Mound, Texas, has been hired as the City of Pensacola’s new Chief Information Officer (CIO). As CIO, Smith will lead the City’s Technology Resources Division, which is responsible for managing the City’s computer and telecommunications networks and other information technology infrastructure. Smith succeeds former CIO Paul Jones, who left the City late last year to accept a position with the Palm Beach County Clerk & Comptroller in West Palm Beach, Florida. Smith has extensive experience working in both the public and private sectors, including past service as the Chief Information Officer for both Tarrant County, Texas (Fort Worth area) and Orange County, Florida (Orlando). Smith holds a Bachelors in Business Administration in management information systems from the University of Texas at Arlington. “More than ever before, technology plays a major role in how government serves its citizens,” said Mayor Hayward. “Over the last few years, we’ve made huge strides in technology at City Hall, with a new website, 311 mobile app, digital newsletters, a complete overhaul of the City’s network, and much more. Steve shares my commitment to leveraging technology to continue innovating and improving how we do business and serve the public, and I am excited to welcome him to Pensacola.” Among his many accomplishments, Smith is a past recipient of Texas’ “Public CIO of the Year” award in 2010.
