Commissioners OK ECUA recycling projects,other measures

At the June 25 Escambia County Commission meeting, commissioners approved the following actions:
— Adding a doctor from Maxim Physician Resources at the Escambia County Jail for $55,400.
— Gave approval to the ECUA to negotiate with the company to build a mixed waste processing facility — which includes recycling — at the Perdido Landfill.
— Gave approval to build a temporary recycling processing facility at the ECUA’s Central Water Reclamation Facility.
— Reallocated $200,000 to Myrtle Grove Elementary School sidewalk project.
— Approved a memorandum of understanding with the Escambia School District to offer vocational training at the Escambia County Jail.
— Authorized spending tourist development tax dollars, $30,000 to the Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway; $40,000 for the second annual Brownsville Gospel All-Stars Concert; $5,000 for the Barrineau Park Fall Festival.
— Welcome Todd Humble as the new director of the West Florida Public Library System. His start date is Aug. 4.
— Set the first of two public hearings for renewing the dog park on Pensacola Beach for July 7.
— Approved paying $29,557 to HDR Engineering for engineering and surveying services related to the Delano drainage area project.
— Heard an update from the Pensacola Sports Association’s progress toward fundraising to conduct a study on the viability of investing in the sports tourism market in Pensacola. The study is estimated to cost $102,000. The PSA, according to director Ray Palmer, has raised $37,200 in cash and $3,500 in in-kind support toward funding the study.
