“Cops” is giving the Escambia Sheriff’s Office its close up. The long-running reality television show, now in its 27th season, rode along with Escambia deputies for about eight weeks last year to gather material for the show. The first episode to feature some of that footage is set to air at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 on Spike. The episode will feature footage from Glendale and the Wichita police departments as well. The online teaser for the episode reads: “A man’s wife can’t help him stay out of jail no matter how much he calls for her.  One thief tries to give back his stolen loot.  When approached by officers, a woman goes from passed out to out of control.” Escambia Sheriff’s Sgt. Andrew Hobbs said the “Cops” crew were filming in nearby Prichard, Ala., when they reached out to the Escambia Sheriff’s Office to participate, too. Hobbs said the film crew participated in ride-alongs with the evening and midnight shifts for about eight weeks late last summer and early fall until they had enough material. “I think they got six storylines, or six episodes worth of material from that,” Hobbs says. The producers we re easy to work with, Hobbs said, allowing the Sheriff’s Office to screen footage that would be aired before the episode is broadcast. “They’ve been really good to work with,” Hobbs says. “They allow us to see everything before it’s used. They weren’t intrusive. They were very professional to work with.” “And on the recruiting side of things, us being on ‘Cops’ has our agency being shown throughout the United States. It may help us find someone who is looking for a job in law enforcement who may be willing to move to the area and who will be familiar now with the Escambia Sheriff’s Office.” Watch the preview here: [youtube id = "DeTuWN-Nq3E"]
