What is the snapshot of crime in Escambia County in the first quarter of 2014?

From January through March, there have been 44 sex crimes reported to the Sheriff’s Office, 456 residential burglaries and 120 vehicle thefts. There was one reported homicide and one reported manslaughter.

If that pace holds, sex crimes would decrease again over last year’s data, as would burglaries and vehicle thefts.

Data from April and May is not yet available. The monthly reports are just a snapshot; crimes may be reclassified as an investigation proceeds or other information comes to light. Law enforcement agencies are required to report crime data to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement at six months and at the end of the year.

The highlights of the monthly reports are as follows:

January: No homicides; 12 sex crimes; 24 robberies; 96 aggravated assaults.

-- 197 domestic violence offenses, in 68 of them the victim and offender lived together, in 35 they were married.

-- Stolen cars: 35 locally stolen cars were recovered that month; 45 vehicle thefts including 21 autos.

-- 161 residential burglaries.

February: No homicides; 15 sex crimes; 16 robberies; 71 aggravated assaults.

-- 178 domestic violence offenses; in 61 of the, the offender and the victim lived together, in 37 they were married.

-- Stolen cars: 42 locally stolen cars were recovered that month; 37 vehicle thefts including 20 autos.

-- 155 residential burglaries.

March: One homicide, one manslaughter; 17 sex crimes; 18 robberies; 85 aggravated assaults. -- 225 domestic violence offenses, in 70 of them the offender and the victim lived together, in 34 they were married.

-- Stolen cars: 44 locally stolen vehicles were recovered that month. 38 vehicle thefts, including 24 autos.

-- 140 residential burglaries.

In 2013, data that the Sheriff’s Office submitted to FDLE showed a 3.3 percent drop in the total crime index, and 9.3 percent drop in violent crime compared to 2012.

Decreases in sex crimes, burglaries and robberies were big contributors to that decrease. The year to year comparison is here.
