Whatever that smell was in the air last week, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection still is tracking it. Residents throughout the Pensacola metro area reported the smell beginning Dec. 10. Brandy Smith, external affairs manager for the Northwest District of DEP, says officials are working to determine the cause or source of the odors. DEP got 98 reports through an online reporting tool set up to track the smell, Smith said. “Most of the complaints noted odor over the weekend, but a few did note odors into this week,” Smith says. On possible source mentioned was the Taminco plant near Pace. "Based on the prevailing wind direction, the complaints being similar in nature (fishy, chemical smell), and the proximity and characteristics of Taminco’s production, we conducted a complaint inspection of their facility earlier this week," Smith says. "At this time, we do not have enough evidence to conclude that Taminco was or wasn’t the source." DEP’s investigation includes looking for trends in the logged complaints in regards to time, location and description of the odor, as well as performing site visits at multiple facilities in the areas where those complaints seem to have been concentrated, Smith says. If you have reports of the odor, use this link to file them with DEP.
