New guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will not impact the levels of fluoride used in Emerald Coast Utilities Authority water supplies. The Associated Press reports today that the government is lowering the recommended level of fluoride in drinking water because the cavity-fighting additive is available in numerous products including toothpaste, mouthwash and other products. Read more about that here. Too much fluoride can cause splotches on children's teeth. Nathalie Bowers, spokeswoman for the ECUA, said that the utility has used the 0.7 parts per million standard for several years. The old guidelines had a different standard for water systems in colder climates.

The changes makes the 0.7 ppm uniform for water systems everywhere, regardless of climate.

"We won't have to adjust to new guidelines," Bowers said.
