If you’ve only seen Santa Rosa County as you drive along the busy commercial corridors, there’s 100 miles of a more scenic view waiting for you and your bicycle. The 15th annual Fenner McConnell / Matt Wantz Blackwater Heritage Century Ride is set for Oct. 18, starting at the Milton Community Center and traveling deep into the heart of Blackwater River State Forest – all aimed at raising money for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Northwest Florida and the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Emerald Coast. “This event is for the die-hard cyclist and for anyone who has a bike,” said Natalie Chism, director of marketing and development for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Northwest Florida. “It is a century ride, but not all cyclists can ride 100 miles, so we offer different options so the cyclist can choose based on their ability.” In addition to the 100 mile trek, the ride offers 18, 40 and 62 mile routes. “The option gives families the ability to ride together and have fun taking their time, enjoying the trail, while the die-hard riders can blaze the longer mile options,” Chism said. “There is room for all skill levels. Everyone is very respectful of each other.” [sidebar] IF YOU GO:

[/sidebar] The ride started as a memorial effort for two avid cyclists who were members of the West Florida Wheelman Cycling Club. Dr. Fenner McConnell, the medical examiner for Northwest Florida, was killed in 1998 by a hit-and-run driver as he rode his bicycle across the Bob Sikes Bridge. Matt Wantz was killed while working in a local bike shop. Big Brothers/Big Sisters took over planning the event three years ago. This year, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Emerald Coast is helping plan the event and will also benefit from the ride. “Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Northwest Florida has received a donation from this ride every year since it began 15 years ago due to the efforts of a former big brother and friend of our agency, Randy Bullock,” Chism said. “Randy is a member of the West Florida Wheelman Club and served as the ride director until 2011 when Big Brothers/Big Sisters took over the event.” The Boys & Girls Club opened its first outlet in Santa Rosa County in 2012 when it brought after-school and summer programming to the East Milton Recreation Park. Jessica Davis, vice president of development & marketing for the Boys & Girls Club, said all of the money it receives from the Fenner ride will be used for the clubs “intentional impact programming.” “Intentional impact programming is programming with a purpose,” Davis said. “All of our programs fall within one of our three priority outcome areas: academic success; good character and citizenship and healthy lifestyles.” Last year’s event drew about 200 participants and raised about $10,900 – numbers Chism expects this year’s ride will far surpass. “Our goal is 400-plus cyclists,” Chism said. “Last year we almost canceled the event due to inclement weather and therefore our numbers were down. Our fundraising goal is $28,000 and we are currently seeking sponsorships.” Early registration is $45 and includes a T-shirt, fully supported rest stops, limited SAG support and a post-ride meal. Registration on the day of the race begins at 7 a.m. at the Milton Community Center. Early registration ends Oct. 13. Thereafter, the registration fee is $55.
