Former University of West Florida men’s golfer David Lingmerth made history on Sunday, June 7, by becoming the first former player in program history to win a PGA Tour event. Lingmerth edged out Justin Rose in a three-hole playoff to win the Memorial Tournament en route to the former Argonaut’s first victory on the PGA Tour. The native of Tranas, Sweden, earns an automatic birth into the Masters Tournament and the PGA Championship with the win and a three-year exemption on the PGA Tour. “It was pretty exciting to watch someone you coached win on the PGA Tour,” UWF men’s golf head coach Steve Fell said. “It’s something that you kind of dream about, to have one of your former players have that kind of success. To watch that happen was pretty cool.” Lingmerth played under UWF head coach Steve Fell from 2006-07 and competed in all eight tournaments during his one season as an Argonaut. He had one victory at the Southeastern Intercollegiate and was the No. 5 player in the nation according to Golfstat before transferring to Arkansas.
