Students at Molino Park Elementary School can get a boost in math thanks to a grant from America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education, sponsored by the Monsanto fund. The $25,000 grant will go to the purchase of iPads, charging stations and mathematics applications for third- and fourth-grade students. Local farmers nominated the Escambia County School District for a chance to apply for the grant. School administrators designed a math-based project for the grant application. After all of the School District applications were submitted, a panel of math and science teachers reviewed each application and selected finalists. An advisory council, composed of farmer leaders with an interest in agriculture and education, then selected the winning grant applications from a pool of finalists. The school’s goal is to increase student learning and engagement through hands-on projects and real-world learning. Through daily use of math applications such as Rocket Math, Divisibility Dash and Math Garden, students will access their lessons, perform required tasks, and complete assessments and activities that will strengthen their understanding of tough concepts. Overall, the school hopes to boost student performance in math by 7 percent. “This grant will afford our students opportunities to bolster their technological literacy and math fluency, as well as increase student engagement, thus creating an avenue for achieving academic proficiency,” principal Alice Woodward said. Grow Rural Education encourages farmers to nominate a local public school district, which can then compete for a grant of up to $25,000. Since 2011, Grow Rural Education has invested more than $7 million to support math and science education in rural school districts across the country. This program is part of the America’s Farmers initiative, which partners with farmers to support education, service organizations and youth in rural America.
