Art is in the eye of the beholder and whatever your artful eye likes to behold, there is a bit of it at DeVilliers Square this week.

Through Friday, Seniors in Pensacola State College’s bachelor’s program in graphic design will display their works in the lobby of the building at 321 N. DeVilliers St.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. A meet-the-artists reception is Wednesday, April 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Students featured in the exhibition are Kalesha Bogan, Crystal Davis and Sara Kucharnik, whose work reflects their multifaceted interests in typography, graphic design, photography, digital art, multimedia, book arts and fine art.

Kucharnik, who now works at Duncan McCall Advertising, says the work has broaden her skill set. She may even return to take drawing and painting classes to enhance her professional repertoire.

“Everyone brought their own thing to it,” Kucharnik says. “I think you can see the artists personalities.”

Davis’ work, focuses on artful nature features, (including some lovely fairy-like creatures) and Bogan’s work has more of a focus on the graphic design elements.

Mark Hopkins is graphic arts program coordinator for the college, which launched the bachelor of applied science graphic design concentration in January 2012. Some of his students had a similar show for their work at the DeVilliers Square building in December.

Students have to set up the show, secure the space and sell their works if possible, which allis good practical training for the real world.

“As a graphic designer in the future, that’s what you’re providing to your clients,” Kucharnik says. “Your client needs a certain type of media, and you have to make it happen.”

Kucharnik looks forward to working with other artists in the community in the future. She recently went to Startup Weekend and the team  she worked with created an app for a video interview interface that won first place.

She’ll continue to to work with them as well as that idea develops.

The Pensacola native wants to stay here. “I think it’s a great place and I think there’s a lot opportunity,” she says. “And if we keep working and growing together it will be an even better place.”
