Guy Harvey brings fine art and lionfish awareness to Pensacola

It’s the perfect Guy Harvey storm...where lionfish and marine art collide for a special weekend in Pensacola. The date is May 16, which has officially been crowned, Lionfish Removal and Awareness Day (LRAD). A festival will be held with food, drink, music and celebrity chefs preparing lionfish at the Plaza de Luna Park and Palafox Marina in downtown Pensacola. Guy Harvey will be in Pensacola kicking off his summer­long art exhibit at the Pensacola Museum of Art. Harvey will also be throwing out the first pitch for the the Blue Wahoos. The First Annual LRAD event is slated for May 16 and 17 and is presented by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, Guy Harvey Magazine, Coast Watch Alliance and the Gulf Coast Lionfish Coalition. While the major festivities are headquartered in Pensacola, hunters from the Panhandle to Key West are being encouraged to spear the little buggers with reckless abandon and report their kill. The FWC plans on keeping track of how many lionfish are culled that weekend and post the results to their new website, www.reefrangers.com, a site dedicated specifically to the whole lionfish bugaboo. The Guy Harvey art exhibit is coming to the Pensacola Museum of Art and will run from May through August. Some 50 pieces of Guy’s original art will be featured at the museum. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the festivities, eat lionfish and learn what they can do to help stop the invasive species.
