Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward announced Friday that he has nominated Ms. Lysia Bowling to serve as city attorney. Ms. Bowling has dedicated her career to public service, with over two decades of management and legal experience in state and local government both in Texas and Florida. Since 2009, Ms. Bowling has served as the city attorney for the City of San Angelo, Texas. “Lysia is extremely impressive, well-qualified candidate, and I am thrilled to nominate her as our City Attorney,” Hayward said. “Her dynamic nature, distinguished experience, and dedication to public service stood out immediately, and I believe she will be a great fit for our City government.” Ms. Bowling holds double bachelor’s degrees in political science and Latin American studies from Yale University as well as a Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law. Prior to her service in San Angelo, Ms. Bowling served as an Assistant State Attorney for Florida’s Eleventh Judicial Circuit, as well as an Assistant City Attorney and Police Legal Advisor for the City of Miami, Florida. Ms. Bowling has also served as the City Attorney for Harlingen, Texas, as a Police Legal Advisor and City Prosecutor for Temple, Texas, and as Chief Prosecutor for Austin, Texas, as well as with several Texas state agencies, including the Comptroller of Public Accounts, General Land Office, Department of Insurance, and Attorney General’s Office. Throughout her career, Ms. Bowling has had a passion for community service, especially in working to empower women and young people through education. She previously served as a judge in Miami’s Teen Court and has been active as a mentor in the Take Stock in Children program, among other organizations. “I am honored to have the opportunity to build on my professional experience and take on new challenges,” said Bowling. “Pensacola is a beautiful and diverse city, and my goal is to provide the Mayor and City Council with the best possible legal representation.” Per the City Charter, the City Attorney represents the City in legal proceedings and serves as the chief legal advisor to elected or appointed officials, boards and commissions, and employees. The Charter provides that the Mayor shall appoint a City Attorney with the consent of the City Council, with an affirmative vote by a majority of City Council members required. The Council is expected to take up the nomination at its March 12 meeting.
