Warrington Middle School band is booming — and now it needs help to keep bringing the noise. The school’s band program, whose enrollment has averaged 20 students, has soared this year to 242 students. District fine arts specialist Angela Funderburk says much of the credit goes to a dynamic new band teacher at the school, Caleb Lovely. “They are clamoring to get into his class,” Funderburk said. The district has invested $16,000 in instruments, and Lovely had about 80 instruments, but there still are not enough instruments to meet demand. And the monthly rental fee for instruments — which ranges from $30 to $70 depending on the instrument — is a financial stretch for some families at the school, Funderburk said. Band students have been collecting gently used instruments for the last two weeks. They will continue their effort at tonight’s Gallery Night. Donations of gently used instruments will be accepted from 6 to 9 p.m. in front of Artel Gallery on Palafox Street in downtown Pensacola. The donated instruments will be the school’s property, so they will be able to serve students to come as well as the current crop of young musicians. The biggest needs are flutes, clarinets and trumpets.
