Highlights of the Aug. 26 primary

At a glance here are some of the highlights of the results of the Aug. 26 primary election, with all 79 precincts reporting in Escambia County and all 41 Santa Rosa precincts reporting:

ESCAMBIA

— Escambia County Commissioner Gene Valentino couldn’t make it out of the Republican primary. Doug Underhill unseated Valentino with 62.49 percent of the vote.

Valentino, the founder of CollectorSolutions Inc., an internet-based online payment company, had been on the commission since 2006.

Underhill will face Deb Moore, who beat Ray Guillory in the Democratic primary for the District 2 seat. She had 56.62 percent of the vote.

— In the Escambia School Board District 3 race, incumbent Linda Moultire led challenger Charlie Nichols by 18 votes — 1,855 to 1,837. Linda Dortch Edler had 1,439 votes in the three-way race. Because no one got more than 50 percent of the vote, Moultrie and Nichols will move on to the general election on Nov. 4.

Moultire’s fellow School Board incumbents who were up for election — Gerald Boone and Jeff Bergosh — had no opposition.

SANTA ROSA

— There will be a new mayor of Milton for the first time since 1989. Guy Thompson was unseated by Wes Meiss. Meiss took 59.2 percent of the vote. Thompson is executive director of United Way of Santa Rosa County; Meiss is a history teacher at Hobbs Middle School.

— For Milton City Council, Ashley Lay, president of Santa Rosa Young Professionals, took the Ward 1 Seat 1 seat vacated by Meiss in his mayoral run.

— In Ward 1 Seat 2, Jimmy Messick, an accountant, beat Vernon Compton. Incumbent Patty Lunsford was returned to her Ward 2 Seat 1 seat with 66.67 percent of the vote.

— The Ward 2 Seat 2 spot went to Mary Ellen Johnson, a retired school administrator.

— Ward 3 Seat 1 goes to Alan Lowery, with 54.87 percent of the vote.

— Bob Cole and Jim Melvin, incumbents now fighting each other for the District 2 seat thanks redistricting were neck and neck. Cole led Melvin by 65 votes — 6,653 to 6,588.

— The District 4 Republican primary for the Commission’s District 4 seat seems to be Rob Williamson’s. With 35.39 percent of the vote, he leads a five-candidate pack.

— Diane Scott got the Santa Rosa School Board District 1 seat, with 66.79 percent of the vote. The District 3 School Board was a tight race, with Jim Taylor earning 5,560 votes and Carol Boston earning 5,247 votes.

MULTICOUNTY RACES

— State Rep. Doug Broxson leads the race for the District 3 House seat with 69.85 percent of the ballots cast.

— Jennie Kinsey leads Michelle Inere in the First Judicial Circuit Group 22 race. Kinsey had 58.84 percent of the vote, according to the Florida Division of Elections.
