The Palafox Place block between Garden and Romana streets will be closed on Saturday for the unveiling of a historical marker honoring civil rights pioneers in Pensacola. The marker honors the late civil rights leader the Rev. William C. Dobbins and the NAACP Youth Council members who participated in the 1961 sit-ins that brought about the desegregation of Pensacola’s downtown lunch counters. See our previous story here. “It is wonderful to see these heroes recognized 55 years after the sit-ins,” said Sarah Jones, whose UWF Dissertation on the sit-ins helped spawn the movement to place the marker. “This is our town’s past and people need to know what happened here.” The marker will be dedicated at 3 p.m. and over 25 members of the NAACP Pensacola Youth Council of 1961 will be attending. The street will be closed from 2 to 6 p.m. According to a press release from the Downtown Improvement Board, pedestrian traffic will be open during the event, but vehicle traffic will be closed for the event.
