John Appleyard and the history of Sacred Heart Hospital

Local historian John Appleyard and Sacred Heart Health System are hosting a seminar focused on the early years of Sacred Heart. Appleyard has published more than 100 books, including histories of prominent local families, novels and non-fiction works detailing the Pensacola area’s rich history. The seminar is set for July 1 in Sacred Heart Hospital’s Greenhut Auditorium located at 5151 N. Ninth Ave. Appleyard will begin the presentation at 5:30 p.m. A question and answer session will follow. Pensacola historian John Appleyard.[/caption] Appleyard will start by giving an overview of what healthcare looked like in the Pensacola community in 1914, a year before the original Sacred Heart Hospital was open. He will discuss the healthcare challenges the community faced during the early years of the hospital, including the worldwide influenza pandemic of 1918 and World War II. Appleyard will also cover the reasons why Sacred Heart Hospital moved from their original location on 12th Avenue to their existing location on 9th Avenue in 1965.
