Kickball isn’t just a game just kids anymore. For Escambia County School District employees the game is a team-builder, fundraiser and a lot of fun. The fifth annual Escambia Physical Education Association Kickball Tournament for School District employees will be Friday and Saturday at Exchange Park in Pensacola. The kickball tournament was started to help raise money for physical education initiatives across the district, including professional development opportunities for teachers and for support of local wellness events such the annual World Wide Day of Play. “I have taken a personal stand this year to promote health and wellness throughout the district, and this tournament is a fantastic way for our employees to form teams and work together while getting fresh air and exercise at practice during the tournament,” says Malcolm Thomas, superintendent of Escambia schools. “There will be 24 teams and I hope hundreds, or even thousands, of our employees come out to share the day and cheer for their team over the course of two days.” Each team has at least 10 players from their school or department who are current employees. Teams of School District employees are gearing up for this year’s Kickball Tournament. What started out as a light-hearted fun way for adults to revisit their childhood, raise some money and have a little fun together, has grown into a spring sport event complete with team mascots, costumed fans and bona fide cheerleaders. Last year’s winners were Warrington Middle School (Jetson Division, Bailey Middle School (Flintstone “A” Division) and Longleaf Elementary School (Flintstone “B” Division) The tournament is a partnership involving the School District, Andrews’ Institute and the City of Pensacola’s Park and Recreation Department. “This is a great way to build district pride, school pride, camaraderie and spread the wellness message,” said Casandra Waller, Teacher of Special Assignment to the School Disrict’s Wellness Center. “And we have a lot of fun!”
