Veterans of Operation Desert Storm and Operation Desert Shield will be honored at 6 p.m. June 26 at Veterans Memorial Park in downtown Pensacola. Speakers at the Heroes Among Us event will include Lt. Col. Rafford Coleman, USMC, commanding officer of HT-18 at Whiting Field Naval Air Station; and retired Marines Major Pete Keeling and Col. Christopher “Caveman” Holzworth. The operations were part of the Gulf War, in which coalition forces from 34 nations led by the United States responded to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. Operation Desert Shield, which began in August 1990, was the name for operations leading to the buildup of troops and the defense of Saudi Arabia; Operation Desert Storm was the name for the combat phase, which began in January 1991. The gathering is free and open to the public. It’s part of a monthly series that salutes Northwest Florida residents from all branches of military service. Organized by the Marine Corps League, J. R. Spears Detachment 066, it is held at Veterans Memorial Park at Ninth Avenue and Bayfront Parkway in downtown Pensacola. Water and light food will be provided; people should bring their own chairs or blankets. In case of rain the event will be moved to Rosie O’Grady’s at Seville Quarter. The organization has collected $30,000 in donations for its “Marines In Distress” fund, which helps veterans who need assistance. Tax-deductible donations for the “Marines in Distress” Fund can be sent to: Edward Rouse, C.P.A., 6825 Oak Street, Milton, FL 32570 Checks payable to: MCL DET #066
