Mainline Art House in downtown Pensacola has announced an exhibit featuring the work of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered artists for Memorial Day weekend. “Natural Attraction” features Florida Panhandle artists Cody Copeland and Cody Painter. Partners as well as fellow artists, their mutual influence is apparent in the quiet works they produce. Copeland makes emotionally charged, mixed media works on reclaimed wood. On top of the salvaged material, Copeeland paints images of antlers and wild birds speaking to a quest for freedom from the past, and a hope for a future that cannot yet be grasped. Painter reinvents the majestic Southern icon, the magnolia, in a plaster form. The silken texture of flower is lost the rougher plaster surface; however, the brittle quality of the material itself suggests the same kind of delicacy and vulnerability to outside forces. The exhibition opens during Gallery Night on Friday, May 22, and will run through June. For more information, please contact Mikel Traffanstead at [email protected] or (850) 332-5361.
