Make a date with a book this month

  During the month of August, you can get a blind date at the Tryon Branch Library — with a book.  

In the branch’s Teen Study Room, choose from the “Blind Date With a Book” display (books wrapped in brown paper with short descriptions on the outside) for a new book to read.

When you have read the book, write your opinion of the book or a short review (1-2 lines) on the inside of the book and return it to the display and repeat as desired.

That is one of many things going on at West Florida Public Library locations in Escambia County throughout August. Some highlights include:

Art Exhibit

  • Now through Saturday, August 30 – Molino Branch

Member of Quayside Art Gallery and Molino resident, Debbie Andress, will display her artwork at the Molino Branch during its regular business hours.

American Girl Book Club

  • Saturday, August 16, 2 p.m. – Southwest

Girls ages 6 to 12 will learn about American life through the experiences of Caroline in 1812 America by exploring different activities from the time period, such as making butter and playing simple games.

Book Discussion Group

  • Wednesday, August 20, 10:30 a.m. – Main Library

Hot Reads: Adult Summer Reading

Join this informal discussion weekly on Friday about modern classics, soon-to-be released books, book trends or if you are interested in learning about reading and more.

With The Kids: Reading Educational Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) program, your child can improve his or her reading skills by practicing reading to therapy dogs.

Little Brother Book Discussion

Local scholar Scott Satterwhite will lead in-depth discussion of the book Little Brother by Cory Doctorow. Teens and adults are welcome. Refreshments will be provided.

Children ages 8 and older are welcome to come make a model of their own with the Pensacola Modeleers. This program is free of charge and space is limited.

West Florida Genealogical Society Monthly Meeting

Author Visit: William L. Mikulas, PhD

William L. Mikulas, PhD, is the author of Taming the Drunken Monkey: The Path to Mindfulness, Meditation and Increased Concentration. He lives in Pensacola and is Professor Emeritus at UWF. Mikulas has also done lectures, interviews and workshops around the world on Buddhist and Western psychology.
