Music Study Club presents 'Your Brain on Music' Feb. 11

The Music Study Club presents music educator and entrepreneur Nan DeStafney on Wednesday, February 11, at the First Baptist Church, Pleitz Chapel, 500 N. Palafox St. Coffee begins at 10 a.m. and the free program begins at 10:30 a.m. The presentation is titled “Your Brain on Music.” DeStafney graduated from nursing school at Sacramento City College in 1981 and specialized in neurology. She received her BSN in 1986 and MSN in 1992 from the University of Texas, and her MSN in Forensic Nursing from Duquesne University in 2007. She has lectured at colleges and national conferences on trauma and traumatic brain injury, and forensic aspects of interpersonal violence. She retired from the United States Navy in 2009 after 37 years of service, and presently teaches piano at Blues Angel Music where she specializes in students with neurological disorders. She is currently authoring a book on teaching piano to autistic children due to be published in September. Future programs planned for the Music Study Club include: March 11: “What Is That Instrument” presented by oboe and English horn symphonist and educator Clair Weddle April 8: Music teacher Ed Varela is “Passionate for Piano & Voice May 13: Showcasing our Scholarship Winners. The Music Study Club of Pensacola was formed in 1919, and is the oldest continuing music organization in Pensacola. Scholarships to high school contestants are awarded yearly in piano (junior and senior), strings, woodwind/brass and voice. The current deadline for applications is February 15.
