Look for another big donor announcement from the YMCA of Northwest Florida to come soon. “We’ve been very quiet about our fundraising,” said board chairman Jon Kagan. “That’s about to change.” The next announcement will be a six-figure donation “between the last two that we’ve announced” by a local donor who has longstanding ties to the Y, said Andrea Rosenbaum, director of advancement for the Y. That announcement should be coming in the next week or so. This afternoon, the James M. Cox Foundation gave $300,000 to the campaign to construct a $16 million flagship downtown YMCA building at the corner of Intendencia and Tarragona streets. The Cox donation came hard on the heels of the announcement of a $1 million donation from Teri and Fred Levin and $1 million from the Bear Family Foundation toward the fundraising campaign. The new YMCA will be the centerpiece of a six-acre, mixed-use redevelopment project that will bring more affordable housing to downtown Pensacola. The modern facility is projected to serve nearly three times as many people as the current location. Groundbreaking on the new facility is set for later this year, with opening planned for late 2016. The founding gift to the project came from Quint and Rishy Studer, who donated $5 million and the land for the new facility. “A year and a half from now, we'll be looking at something that was well worth the effort." Kagan said.
