Tabassum Adnan is a recipient of the 2015 Secretary of State’s International Women of Courage Award. Adnan is from the Swat Valley in Pakistan. She was married at 13 and for 20 years suffered from mental and physical abuse at the hands of her husband. She divorced him four years ago and started Khwendo jirga, the first women’s only jirga in the Swat Valley. She is also the only woman to participate in the male jirga, a traditional assembly of community leaders to settle disputes in tribal areas. She sat down with The Daily Brew to share her story.
