President Barack Obama has nominated Pensacola native Brig. Gen. Craig Crenshaw to receive a second star, promoting him to the rank of Major General in the U.S Marine Corps. Crenshaw, 52, is currently the assistant deputy commandant for Installations Logistics at headquarters Marine Corps. His nomination is before the Senate Armed Forces Services Committee where it must be approved before his second star can be pinned. A graduate of Southern University, Crenshaw grew up on E and Baars streets, in what is commonly called “Shantytown.” He is one of the 10 military generals who graduated from the historically black college in Louisiana. Crenshaw is the only Marine among the generals. The other nine are from the U.S. Army. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marines in 1984 through the NROTC Scholarship Program at Southern. Crenshaw has a master of arts degree in Procurement and Acquisitions Management from Webster University, in St. Louis; and a master of science degree in National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, National Defense University, Washington, D.C.
