Beginning Oct. 28, the Pensacola Police Department will give away 2,000 dog tags that glow in the dark for children to wear over costumes while trick or treating. With the addition of this year’s tags, the department will have given away 7,000 tags since it began the program in 2011. “We want children to have a good time on Halloween, but we also want them to be safe. These tags are not meant to replace traditional safety recommendations such as reflective costumes and flashlights, but are an additional safety tool,” said Chief Chip W. Simmons. The tags, which were purchased with confiscated drug money, measure about one by two inches and are on about a 15-inch string. They have an 8-hour battery life and can be set to blink at various speeds. The tags will be available to city residents on a first come, first served basis until gone between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the department’s Neighborhood Services Division at 711 N. Hayne St.
