Pensacola Police are investigating criminal mischief that resulted in approximately $10,000 worth of damages to nine headstones in a historic downtown Pensacola cemetery. The damage was reported to police around 8:15 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael’s Cemetery. Officer Liz Akogwu said the damage occurred between Nov. 2-15, but it wasn’t reported to police until Tuesday morning to allow an archaeologist time to review and document the damage. Ross Pristera, a historic preservationist from the University of West Florida Historic Trust, estimated the damage at approximately $10,000. Akogwu said most of the headstones broke after they were kicked or pushed over. A cross and urn on one of the headstones also was broken. The oldest headstone dated from 1879. If you have information about the crime, call the Pensacola Police Department at 435-1900.
