Pensacola State College celebrates Black History Month

Pensacola State College is hosting a series of events and activities in celebration of February Black History Month. For more than 500 years, people of African descent have made contributions to shape the course of American history. Established as Negro History Week in the 1920s by Carter G. Woodson, February was chosen for the celebration because Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln were born in this month. Extended to a month-long celebration in 1976, Black History Month is an opportunity to emphasize the history and achievements of African Americans. In honor of the Black History Month, PSC’s month-long activities and events include:
  • Integration of Civil Rights: Historic civil rights photographs by the critically acclaimed photojournalist Art Shay are currently on display at PSC’s Anna Lamar Switzer Center for Visual Arts. The exhibit runs through March 13th.  Free and open to the public. For information, call 484-2550.
  • The African American Heritage Society’s “Readers Ensemble” will perform, Thursday, Feb. 26, from 6 p.m. to 8 pm at the Anna Lamar Switzer Center for Visual Arts. The Ensemble (a diverse group of writers and authors) will perform selections from the book series ” When Black Folks Was Colored”. This collaborative event features narratives provided by the Visual Arts faculty and students. It is free and open to the public. For more information, call 484-1759 or 484-2550.
  • The African American Memorial Endowment Scholarship and the Garrett T. Wiggins “Live Your Dream “ Scholarship Banquet, will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at the Jean & Paul Amos Performance Studio. Tickets are $10.  For more information, call 484-1759.
  • Take a journey through the varied cultural interests of the many ethnic communities throughout Northwest Florida on Aware! Focusing on people, the series features newsmakers, movers and shakers, role models and celebrities who share their encouraging, inspirational , sometimes controversial and entertaining stories. Aware!, hosted by Dee Dee Sharp  airs on WSRE-TV. Watch local listings for airtimes. For more information, call 484-1759.
