On Saturday March 7, join the Pensacola Symphony for their performance of Strauss’ Don Quixote – starring cellist Scott Kluksdahl – as well as Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony. The concert will take place at 8 p.m. in Downtown Pensacola at the Saenger Theatre. Under the direction of Maestro Peter Rubardt and joined by guest cellist Scott Kluksdahl, the PSO will start the evening with Don Quixote by Richard Strauss – a programmatic tone-poem based on the classic novel by Miguel de Cervantes. To portray the story’s many winding adventures, Strauss set his music as a theme-and-variations, while also giving the two main characters their own solo instrument. The cello, performed by Kluksdahl, represents the muddled Don Quixote – and his saner squire Sancho Panza is voiced by the viola, featuring PSO’s own Brian Brown. Strauss’ piece tells the story so handily that one needs little more than the title to understand at all. Following intermission is Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 Italian. It was inspired during a grand tour of Europe that exposed him to the latest musical styles and ideas for his own works. You can hear Mendelssohn’s cheerful first encounters with Italy in the dashing themes of the first movement. It’s followed by a slower section built from his memories of witnessing a religious march, then comes a similar flowing and lyrical third movement. The finale is a vivacious imitation of the Italian saltarello, whirling about like the dance that it is – before evolving into a wild tarantella to end the evening with a bang! There will be a special matinee dress rehearsal for the concert, beginning at 2PM. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the Palafox entrance of the Saenger Theatre. Starting at 7PM, Dr. Larry Reed will present Classical Conversations. It’s a chance to go behind the scenes and learn about what went behind each piece of music, as well as the opportunity to listen and interact with the evening’s guest artist. The event is free with the concert ticket. Tickets are on sale now and start at only $22. Call the PSO office at (850) 435-2533 or order online at www.pensacolasymphony.com
