On the PensacolaToday.com Short List for Dec. 16: Ewww that smell The Florida Department of Environmental Protection wants Pensacola metro area residents to use an online reporting tool to help them track down the source of the funky smell that filled the air off and on throughout the end of last week. DEP started receiving complaints about the smell on Dec. 10. The department is requesting that residents in Santa Rosa and Escambia counties experiencing any unusually strong odors report them here. Remembering Willie Junior Reginald Dogan examined the political legacy of former Escambia County Commissioner Willie Junior, the first black person elected to the Commission, on the 10th anniversary of his death. For all the people whom Junior helped as “The Cheese Man” handing out food to those who needed it, there are as many who will remember his fall from grace in a bribery scandal that rocked the Commission in 2004. “In spite of how his tenure ended, as far as public perception, he made a tremendous contribution to Escambia County,” said (current District 3 Commissioner Lumon) May. “He will always be used as reference because he was the first.” Read Reggie’s column here. Bloomberg’s bet on Mobile Our neighbor to the west, Mobile is one of 14 communities that will get “innovation team” grants annually for three years from Bloomberg Philanthropies. Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson will use the grants for neighborhood revitalization and economic development programs in neglected neighborhoods, reports al.com. Texas Hills and The Bottom are two neighborhoods that will be targeted first. Read the story here. Bill would allow some guns in schools A bill filed by State Sen. Greg Evers, R-Baker, would allow school superintendents, with school board approval, to designate employees or volunteers who would be allowed to carry concealed weapons in public schools. A designee could be an honorably discharged military veteran, an active-duty member of the military, National Guard or reserves or an active-duty or former law-enforcement officer. The bill matches one filed in the House last week. A similar measure failed to pass the Legislature this year. Read the story here. So far, Fan Favorite voting has raised more than $800 in ticket sales.
