The aftermath of the BP oil spill is still in the news five years later and remembering a Pensacola icon top today’s news. The Pensacola Today Short List for Tuesday, Feb. 17 includes: RESTORE committee faces weighty decision Decisions with a huge impact on the local area’s environmental and economic future could be decided this week. On the agenda is weighting criteria by which projects will be judged for funding from the RESTORE act windfall. The goal is to ensure that projects that get RESTORE money will benefit the oil-damaged environment and some of the neediest neighborhoods in the area, committee members said. Read the story here. Remembering a Pensacola legend Pensacola icon J. Earle Bowden passed away this week and writer Carlton Proctor takes a few moments to remember the impact Bowden had on his life. I am among a legion of hundreds — if not thousands — of journalists and writers who Earle mentored and befriended, and, more importantly, taught to record events accurately and fairly. Read Carlton’s piece here. Workshops scheduled for Century Business Challenge The Century Business Challenge is moving forward for those interested in participating with orientation and workshops. Those who have submitted their application can retrieve the business plan software following the Business Concept workshop, until applications are due March 31. Read more here. YMCA gets $300,000 donation The YMCA received another donation to support the construction of their new facility in downtown Pensacola. The YMCA today announced a $300,000 grant from the James M. Cox Foundation to support the construction of a new $16 million flagship facility at the corner of Tarragona and Intendencia streets in downtown Pensacola. Read the story here.
