International Paper’s Cantonment paper mill does. The Cantonment paper mill operation has more than $122 million in property off the tax rolls, saving it more than $813,000 a year, Property Appraiser Chris Jones said. It was a big deal for downtown in the mid-90s because the building, which used to be the old J.C. Penney store, had been vacant for 15 years. “We wanted to locate BlabTV downtown,” said the station’s founder Fred Vigodsky in a story that ran in the Pensacola News Journal in 1995. “We feel we are the community television station, and the community station should be downtown.” We agree. But today’s move takes Vigodsky’s vision one step further. We are no longer in the back of the building. Our storefront is now on Palafox Street, which has become the heart of downtown. Pensacola users of the app report seeing between two and 10 cars offering rides, varying by day and time. The San Francisco-based company, which offers ridesharing via a smartphone app, brought its low-cost uberX service to Pensacola and dozens of other Florida cities lately.
