Eric Morton is a bicycle commuter who says he has not owned a car in 10 years.
"I am in the midst of a cross-country bicycle ride. I started in Charleston, S.C. I bicycled up the east coast then south to Sarasota, then from Sarasota to here. I am headed west to Austin, Texas, then onto the Rockies and points west. Once I arrive out west, I plan on opening a bicycle shop."
Where do you sleep?
"There is a worldwide hospitality exchange for touring cyclists called warmshowers.com. I use hosts from that website, plus I carry a pack on my bike that has camping gear so I camp as well. I stop in different cities for a couple of weeks at a time and get work at bicycle shops and as a bartender."
How much are you carrying with you on the bicycle?
"My bicycle and pack together weigh 110 pounds. This is an amazing journey for me. I have already biked 5,000 miles and before I am done, I will have biked another 17,000 plus miles. I have points of interest that I want to to see along the way, but the rest of the journey is up to the wind."
