The Pensacola News Journal's veteran sports reporter Bill Vilona has been inducted into the Pensacola Sports Hall of Fame. Vilona first came to Pensacola in 1987, as a reporter for the Gannett Sports Service and covered such stories as Dallas Cowboy legend and Escambia High graduate Emmitt Smith's signing day.
"I got here a couple of weeks before (college football's) national signing day," Vilona said. "I knew of Emmitt Smith (then, at Escambia High), but I walked into the gym at Escambia and they had all these balloons and banners for all these kids going to Division 1 schools. I thought, 'You have to be kidding me.' I realized right away that there are a lot of great athletes for a city this size."
