Developing strategies and marketing plans on how to best promote and brand Pensacola's Historic District are the goals of a one-day conference Monday, April 27. Event organizer Alan Gray of First City Development said the event at the Bowden Building, 120 Church St., is free to the public. Gray said he expects some 100 participants during the event that begin at 2 p.m. Featured speakers include: — Robert Overton, executive director of the University of West Florida Historic Trust, which oversees the Historical District. — Alexander Adams, an expert in green certification of buildings. — Cheryl Hartgrove, cultural tourism expert. — Donovan Rypkema, historic real estate expert. — Christopher Ken, place-making expert and one of the original realtors brokering properties at Seaside in Walton County. Sponsors of the event are the Florida Department of State, Pensacola City Councilman and architect Brian Spencer and the UWF Historic Trust. Gray said discussion topics during the conference will include comparisons on how historical districts compare to other retail districts in marketing, branding and commercial viability. Other topics include a discussion of the range of tax credits, grants and incentives available for historical districts in Florida and nationwide. In addition, there will be time set aside to discuss how to best define and brand a historical district in the Southeast.
