Time to get your symphony on, Pensacola!

Tickets went on sale this week for the the 89th season of the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra. Opening night is Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. at the Saenger Theatre. Tickets start at $22. For details, visit pensacolasymphony.com, call 850-435-2533, or visit the Saenger box office.

The evening begins with a performance of the overture to The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart. Following, the PSO and Maestro Peter Rubardt welcome legendary violinist Glenn Dicterow to the stage for Beethoven’s Violin Concerto.

Dicterow recently concluded an unprecedented 34 seasons as concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic.

“He has been at the center of a staggering number of performances at the highest level and it is a great honor for us to share the stage with a musician of his stature.” says Rubardt. “The Beethoven Violin Concerto stands at the pinnacle of the literature; it is a perfect vehicle for Glenn’s consummate artistry.”

The second half of the concert will feature two ballet scores, both based in Greek mythology.

Samuel Barber’s dramatic and dark Medea’s Dance of Vengeance retells folklore through thrilling orchestral textures. The story of youthful love is beautifully painted in Daphnis et Chloé by Maurice Ravel.

There will be a special matinee dress rehearsal for the concert beginning at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the Palafox entrance of the Saenger. Then starting at 7 p.m., Dr. Larry Reed will present Classical Conversations. It’s the perfect opportunity to learn more about the music, as well as a chance to hear from the evening’s guest artist. The event is free with your concert ticket.
