Ransom Middle School Chess Club ranks at national tournament

Twelve students from Ransom Middle School participated in the 2015 National Junior High (K-9) Chess Championship hosted by the United States Chess Federation (USCF) in Louisville, Ky., from April 23-26. More than a thousand scholastic chess players and 123 teams from states as far away as Hawaii competed in this tournament. Ransom Middle School fielded three teams in three categories based on player ratings. In the team categories, the K-8 under 750 category, Ransom Middle School payers finished in ninth place out of 25 teams and in the K-8 under 1000 category, Ransom players finished in 14th place. In the individual Standings, the K-8 under 1000 category, Ransom Middle School student Tristan Taylor placed fifth out of 183 students and in the K-8 under 750 category, Miles Gibson placed 16th out of 169 students. These students’ victories place them among the highest ranked chess players in the United States and both have been recognized by the USCF with the presentation of a trophy signifying their accomplishment.
