Strong Street Studio may be down, but artist Scott Novota and his wife, Molli, are working to make sure it's not out. The couple, who founded the glass-blowing studio in the backyard of their East Hill home in 2006, are running a Kickstarter campaign to raise $20,000 to replace gear and equipment they lost when the roof of the building they were storing it in collapsed. The Novotas had furnaces, molds, materials and much of their gear in storage at the Truth for Youth building owned by the Rev. John Powell at the corner of Belmont and DeVilliers streets. Sometime overnight on Feb 1-2, the roof collapsed from water damage. Much of the Strong Street Studio equipment was buried under the rubble. What remained was exposed to the elements for days and is now unusable, the Novotas said. Novota has built a reputation particularly for his glass pumpkins. His work is featured in the Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival, as well as in local stores such as Susan Campbell Jewelry, McAlpin Interiors, Fiore, Urban Objects, and the like. Strong_Street_StudioOver the years they’d outgrown the space and bought property on A Street near Bill Haven’s car dealership. They hope the Kickstarter campaign will help them get the funds to replace the equipment that was lost. Check out the campaign here. Molli Novota says they hope "Operation Hot Shop" will allow them to replace their lost equipment, get the studio up and running in its new location and create some neat incentives for those who kick in to the project early on.

"We’re hoping the kickstarter can get us the funds we need to restore what little we have and purchase replacement pieces of what we lost," she said by email. "While our goal of $20,000 doesn’t come close to covering the loss, it will at least get us back up and running with the bare minimums.

"Since Kickstarter is an all or nothing fundraiser, we’re trying to spread the word to try and reach our goal of $20,000 by April 30. We’ve chosen some really unique rewards to offer that will only be available for this Kickstarter event."
